Further out......

Well, York is only about 40 minutes away and is the most beautiful city in Europe (we are biased of course). You can get there by bus if you fancy a drink in one of the 365 pubs in the city (that might not be true, it might be 364). And you have been to Bettys by now? Oh, and a new legal series based in York has started - Eternal Law - it's about some Angels coming down to York and establishing a legal service.....yeah, I know. Oh, and go and see the Temple of Eternal Bells in York.
Also, why not go cat hunting here?

Scarborough has great beaches and is a short bus ride away

And Whitby has Dracula of course....

It also has a new cinema which also does tea dances thus covering several bases in one go. Also, don't miss Whitby's Spring Goth weekend  including even bands we've heard of (Gene loves Jezebel give their last ever performance - that's going to upset someone). There are also 60's festivals and soul weekends. All easily reached from Pickering (by steam train! - go in style!)

Oh, and a short cycle ride from Whitby is the outstanding Robin Hood's Bay. Sadly, the name has nothing to do with Robin Hood. But fascinating history none the less.

If you fancy more walking there is what is known as the Hole of Horcum off the Whitby road. The Hole of Horcum refers to the story of Wade, a hero once famous as a Saxon chief, traveller and fighter. He features in Chaucer and Thomas Malory. At some point he turned into a giant; legend has it that the hole was formed when he grabbed a handful of earth to throw at his wife. Delightful. And possibly not true either.
And don't forget Helmsley for the shopping, Hutton le Hole for the classic Moors village and maybe Thirsk for the races and that vet. How about walking around the White Horse at Kilburn?
Our favourite stately home (amongst many) is Nunnington Hall - a 10 minute drive away.
The other one is Castle Howard (above) of course. Where Aloysius the bear made his home.
